Tom Dowd, Music Producer

Tom Dowd was a brilliant mathematician and physicist who changed careers abruptly after the development of the atomic bomb and changed the course of musical history. He is responsible for Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, John Coltrane, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonius Monk, Cream, Rod Stewart, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Allman Brothers Band, Dusty Springfield and countless other celebrated musicians. Dowd also formed both strong professional and personal relationships with many of these artists, including Eric Clapton, starting with Cream and leading to their working partnership on Layla and Other Assorted Loves Songs and collaborations on several of Clapton’s finest solo albums. So much of the music i love was produced by him, and yet he was man behind the curtain. Even being responsible for so much of musical history, he, like Geoff Emerick before him, was paid only scale and was never compensated commensurate to the contribution he made to history. Welcome to my world!

Clif-Blog-face.jpg

This blog is devoted to expanding people’s awareness and appreciation of natural, artistic and odd things around the globe. When someone learns a foreign language they start with the simplest of animals, dog and cat. We then expand that into the basic farm animals, cows duck, horse etc. But we never learn the foreign word for water buffalo or kinkajou. It is the same when we learn our own language only the subset is slightly larger. All english speakers know not only the basics, but elk and hippo and ocelot. But not everyone knows the pine marten, or the pika or gibbon. This small subset of knowledge is a strategy that we use for every category. We know only a few avatars for architects, wonders of the world, physicists etc. SO for every known example that is common public knowledge, there are many incredible unknowns that are startling and soul expanding. That’s what I want to bring to people’s attention with this blog.
